As a boy, Gordon W. Thomas climbed the rigging of schooners tied up at Gloucester wharves and gazed over the masts out to sea, where he yearned to go. But his father, Capt. Jeffrey Thomas, skipper of the Adventure, would not let him go to sea. The sea was too dangerous, he said. There were enough Thomases at sea.

So Gordon Thomas stayed onshore and became a walking encyclopedia of Gloucester schooners. In 1952, he published the first edition of Fast and Able under the title Builders of Gloucester's Prosperity. This fiftieth-anniversary edition includes histories of schooners not collected in previous editions. It was made possible by the author's son, Jeff Thomas II, and by Nelson B. 'Buck' Robinson, owner of the Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport and publisher of the previous edition.
