Virtually spanning Chaucer's working life, these four poems, like 'The Canterbury Tales' and 'Troilus and Criseyde', build up a marvelous self-portrait of the poet, often self-deprecatory, curious or comically obtused and always witty, lively and humane. Brian Stone introduces each of his excellent verse translations with a short essay, and includes notes and a list of further reading.
