Each of the three volumes deals with one person in the trinity. Volume one, The Living God, deals with God the father, his naming, his nature, his character, his reality (whether he exists, whether he is triune), his work in the world (creation, providence), and the study of God (whether he can be studied, the reasoning of revelation). Volume two, The Word of Life, deals with Jesus Christ, the son of God, how he is the Word made flesh, what Jesus says about God, his sonship, his incarnation, how he chose to come to earth, his life on earth, his proclamations about the kingdom, his public ministry, the work he accomplished, his death on the cross (sacrificial atonement), his victory over death, his resurrection and his ascension. Volume three, Life in the Spirit, deals with the Holy Spirit, his person, his work, repentance, justification by grace through faith, baptism of the Spirit, union with Christ and sanctification, the community (ekklesia) of celebration, death, the end of human history, the communion of saints and the life everlasting.

Oden writes from a broad ecumenical background, focusing on those issues which have acceptance in all branches of Christianity, from Catholic to Protestant, from Orthodox to Charismatic. He quotes extensively from the early church fathers (and mothers where appropriate), offering their valuable insight on those doctrines which shaped the church. He deliberately chose not to write from one particular viewpoint (such as Reformed). His delight in the Word of God is evident from the first page and continues to shine throughout. It is not overly academic, in that knowledge of Greek and Hebrew are not necessary, but it is very well documented, and Oden's sincere hope is that readers will avail themselves of the opportunity to conduct further research in the primary sources. Truly a Christian systematic theology for all Christians.
