Essentials of Evangelical Theology, 2 Volumes Donald Bloesch Published by Systematic Theology
Author: Donald Bloesch
Publisher: Systematic Theology
Description:
Just what does it mean to call oneself an evangelical? Is it just a series of doctrines or is it more experiential? Or is it a combination of both doctrine and experience? Bloesch feels that true evangelicalism is both doctrine and experience, and he wrote The Essentials of Evangelical Theology to share his thoughts on what it means to be an evangelical. The first volume focuses on doctrines pertaining to God, authority and salvation, including the sovereignty of God, the primacy of Scripture, total depravity, the deity of Christ, substitutionary atonement, salvation by grace, and faith. Volume two, which focuses on the issues of life, ministry, and hope, includes topics like regeneration (being born again), holiness, preaching, the priesthood of all believers, the kingdoms of heaven and earth, the mission of the church, the return of Christ, heaven and hell, the distinctiveness of evangelicalism, and the recovery of biblical faith. Since Bloesch is a strongly commited Reformed Evangelical, his standard for authority is always the Bible ( sola scriptura). This means that Bloesch does not shrink back from criticizing even reformers like Calvin and Luther if he sees a discrepancy between their thought and Scripture (acknowledging all the while that many issues are open to interpretation). His explanations of controversial topics like total depravity, justification by faith, and the sovereignty of God focus on how those particular topics have been distorted to teach something different from their original intent. So who is this set for? Bloesch wanted to set forth a clear teaching for evangelicals so they would understand the true tenets of their faith. But he also wants other parts of the Church to understand what evangelicalism really stands for, so that greater unity in the Body of Christ is possible. Thus, this set is written for all those who profess faith in Christ as savior and God as King and Father. It is clear, readable, and enjoyable and it lays out the issues in a coherent fashion, offering insight and information into the true nature of evangelicalism.
