For this reason this edition stresses application, especially in the review section of each unit, which includes directions for how students may use the skills taught and reinforced in this book as they undertake writing assignments or personal writing.< Literary Themes:< In the new Exercises in English series, the number of exercises that have a subject theme has been significantly increased (particularly in unit openers). These exercises have been designed to engage student interest, integrate the language arts, and suggest cross-curricular applications. The subjects vary widely--spanning such areas as literature, history, science, and social studies--and introduce students to a variety of cultural perspectives.< Handbook Section:< Students will find the expanded, comprehensive Handbook of Terms an invaluable reference tool as they complete writing assignments not only in English but in other subjects as well. The Sentence Analysis section is an additional aid.<
